How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

We all know to practice good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing are the most important regimes to keep to prevent tooth decay and disease. But you may be wondering how often you should change your toothbrush? And what happens if you don’t? At West Gate Dental, our staff aims to educate all of our patients on everything dental-related. While going to the dentist is important, all of the work happens by yourself, every day, without supervision. However, we can help! We get asked this question all the time, so here’s what you need to know.

When to Change Your Toothbrush

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends changing your toothbrush every 3 months. Toothbrushes can go through normal wear and tear and eventually become less effective with removing plaque from teeth and gums. Also, germs can hide and build up in toothbrush bristles.

After use, make sure to rinse off and dry your toothbrush thoroughly, storing it uncovered in an upright position. When traveling, be sure to cover your brush to protect it from germs. Also, look at the condition of your toothbrush. It’s a sign to change your toothbrush if:

  • The bristles are worn out or frayed.
  • There are dark colors on it- meaning it could have mold.
  • You’ve just had a cold or infection.

What Happens If You Don’t Change Your Toothbrush Often

There are several risks associated with not changing your toothbrush. Knowing that bacteria and fungus can accumulate on the bristles, uninviting issues can occur. You risk:

  • Damaging your gums and teeth.
  • Gingivitis and infection.
  • Getting sick.
  • Ingest unwanted particles if stored near a toilet.
  • Other diseases.

Overall, it’s important to keep replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or when you notice that the bristles are frayed. If you have an electric toothbrush, you’ll also have to replace the toothbrush head. No matter what dental tools you use, always keep them clean and replace them when needed. When having a clean toothbrush, you’ll have clean teeth.
